scandal that forced out cia director david petraeus. forced him to resign. general john allen, the commander of u.s. and nato forces in afghanistan is now under investigation for alleged inappropriate communications with jill kelley. now investigators are said to be looking into the 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails and other documents that he sent to her. kelley, of course, is the florida woman whose original complaint to the fbi about threatening e-mails inadvertently exposed the affair between general petraeus and paula broadwell. meantime a team of fbi agents searched broadwell's home in charlotte, north carolina, overnight, and spent nearly five hours there wrapping up just after 1:00 in the morning. "wall street journal" is reporting that the fbi agent who launched the petraeus investigation himself is under investigation. in part because he sent shirtless pictures of himself to jill kelley. jill kelley, the woman who kicked off all of this investigation, by complaining about the e-mails that she was getting from the petraeus mistress. so the agent, who knew kelley, alle

emails to petraeus and other senior military leaders besides general john allen. he's the top commander in afghanistan. meanwhile the fbi agent frederick humphries who launched the investigation of emails is being investigated by the fbi for his role in the case. specifically why he took concerns about this case to republican members of congress. house and senate panels are expected to meet again today with fbi and cia officials. they want to know whether national security was jeopardized and why congress didn't know about the investigation sooner. during a news conference on wednesday president obama praised david petraeus. >> general petraeus had an extraordinary career. he served this country with great distinction in iraq, in afghanistan and as head of the cia. by his own assessment he did not meet the standards that he felt were necessary as the director of the cia with respect to this personal matter that he's now dealing with, with his family and with his wife. and it's on that basis that he tendered his resignation and i accepted it. >> the house panel is looking into the govern

and republican senators john mccain and lindsay graham. it began to escalate earlier this morning when the senators vowed to stand in the way of the president if -- if he goes ahead and nominates the united nations ambassador susan rice to replace hillary clinton secretary of state. mccain and graham are scathing of rice's early remarks about the deadly attack on the u.s. diplomats in benghazi, libya. >> this is about the role she played around four dead americans when it seems to be that the story coming out of the administration. and she's the point person, is so disconnected to reality. i don't trust her. and the reason i don't trust her is because i think she knew better. and if she didn't know better, she shouldn't be the voice of america. somebody has got to start paying a price around this place. >> let's see what happens here. but we will do whatever's necessary to block the nomination that's within our power as far as susan rice is concerned. >> all right. listen to the president's very, very angry response to senators mccain and graham during that white house news conference.

general, john allen, commander of all international troops in afghanistan. today the feds are sifting through a mountain of e-mails and messages he traded with a woman named jill kelley. a mind boggling 20,000 to 30,000 pages and agents are searching for anything inappropriate. now here is the common link. that woman, kelley, jill kelley, she's the one who received harassing e-mails supposedly from petraeus' jealous mistress, paula broadwell. petraeus admits to the affair with broadwell and has said that this woman, kelley, is a family friend. we'll take a look at each of these players in a scandal that seems to grow more bizarre by the day. first stop, pentagon and cnn's chris lawrence. so, chris, what specifically are investigators looking for in those messages? morality aside, how serious of a concern is an extramarital affair? >> it's very serious in the military. you're talking about an active duty officer, carol. and under the uniform code of military justice, you can be prosecuted for adultery. john allen is a married, fo four-star general who has been running the war in afghan

of those things need to be in play. when john boehner talks about raising revenue he's willing to do that if it only comes in the form of tax reform, not raising tax rates, but actually lore erring tax rates, closing loopholes, broadening the base and you will get more money coming into the treasury. the other part of the equation that is so important which has not been part of the public conversation is cutting spending, not just slowing the rate of growth but actually cutting spending to try to get this deficit under control. i know the republicans don't control the narrative on this but i want to hear more from them on that side of the equation. jon: julie our nodding your head you must agree. >> i think both sides need to come to the table. enough already with these sort of, you know, showmanship, game man ship, these are people's lives that are at stake in this economy. monica is right in that the president does control the upper hand at this point. if nothing is done all the bush tax rates will expire. you have exit polling coming out of the recent election saying two-thirds of

. >> reporter: in his previous efforts to strike a so-called grand bargain with speaker of the house john boehner, the president proposed $800 billion in new tax revenues. but now, he is seeking twice that. $1.6 trillion in new taxes over the next ten years. that's a bitter pill for republicans to swallow. speaker boehner has called raising tax rates on anybody unacceptable. but he hasn't ruled out limiting deductions and closing loopholes. and that could be the outline of a possible deal. >> if you looked closely at what the president had to say, looked closely at what i have had to say, there are no barriers here to sitting down and beginning to work through this process. >> reporter: but if they don't come to a resolution, beginning january 1st, the economy could be thrown back into recession. and households making $70,000 a year could see their taxes increase over $4,000. the president said he is open to new ideas. and if republicans have a way to raise taxes on the wealthy without raising rates, he wouldn't slam the door on them. george? >> the dancing begins. jon, thanks very much.
